The Sigma 14-24mm f/2.8 DG HSM Art lens is perfect for photographers who love to capture the world in all its wide-angle glory. It's the lens that's always ready to go, no matter what kind of adventure you're embarking on. I decided to pick one up from Adorama shortly before my road trip to Utah this past Spring. I wanted to see how well it would perform capturing some of the most grandiose and awe inspiring landscapes in the United States. This lens was the final piece needed to complete my "trinity" of Sigma lenses.
One of the first things you'll notice about this lens is its impressive focal length range. With a range of 14-24mm, the ability to capture sweeping landscapes, towering buildings, and tight interior shots is immediately realized. It seems as if a whole new perspective is opened up as you begin to see compositions in exciting new ways. Whether you're exploring the great outdoors or snapping photos in a cramped studio, this lens has you covered. It does a phenomenal job of accentuating features of your subject and encapsulating the entire scene. This works well especially in athletic portraits when you wish to show the setting or location of the image as well as the subject itself. You are also able to accentuate or exaggerate certain parts of your image. But beware not to get too close to the edges of the frame as this magnifies the effect.
But the Sigma 14-24 EF lens isn't just about its wide-angle capabilities. It's also incredibly versatile, thanks to its maximum aperture of f/2.8. This means you can shoot in low light conditions without sacrificing image quality, and it also gives you the ability to create beautiful bokeh effects in your photos. I have come to love the wide aperture of Sigma's ƒ2.8 lenses and this lens has proven to produce sharp results, even at wide-open apertures. I was able to pair this lens with my Canon R5 via an RF to EF adapter. The added adapter did add a little length overall to my kit, but image quality was not effected. I would definitely recommend this EF lens even paired with a new mirrorless camera system. The cost savings of adapting EF glass to an RF system currently outweighs the added costs of RF native glass.
The lens is built to last, too. Its robust construction and dust- and splash-proof design make it ideal for outdoor photography, and it can withstand even the most challenging environments. It has a built in metal petal hood that helps to protect the large front glass element that noticeably protrudes from the front of the lens. The front lens cap also feels solid and increases my confidence in its protection abilities of the front element. That large front element also catches a lot of light when a direct light source is in frame, but with Sigma's Super Multi-Layer Coating, ghosting and flare are minimized, helping to retain some of the contrast and clarity in your images. There is no way around it, the lens is hefty and feels quite solid throughout. When compared to the Canon 12-24 the weight seems more evenly spread, whereas the Canon's weight is distributed more frontward. Either way, the large front element is weighty and will add 2.53 lb to your setup.
