In my over 12 years of photography, I have to say high school seniors have to be my all time favorite group of people to photograph. There is so much creativity that can be infused into each senior session, whether it is showcasing athletic power and might or capturing a fun energetic personality, seniors are a lot of fun! Before you know it, graduation will sneak up on you and your senior year will have flown by! So what can you expect your senior photo experience to look like and what are some tips to help you along the way?

Your senior year is an exciting time filled with a lot of changes and decisions about what your journey after school looks like. Your senior photos shouldn't be another hard decision or process (unless you count choosing your favorite images). As a wedding and senior photographer, I know that having the right gear is crucial to capturing the perfect shot. A high-quality telephoto zoom lens is an essential tool for capturing those intimate and emotional moments during a wedding. It is also important when you need the flexibility and range when photographing many other styles and genres of photography such as portraits, wildlife and landscapes. The Sigma 70-200 f2.8 DG OS HSM Sports Telephoto Zoom Lens for Canon is a versatile and high-quality lens that is well-suited for all types of photography. Let's dive into the reasons why this lens should be in your gear bag.

Design and Build

The Sigma 70-200 f2.8 DG OS HSM Sports lens is built with a durable and ergonomic design, which makes it perfect for use in both indoor and outdoor environments. The lens incorporates an inner zoom which means the barrel length does not change in the zoom of the lens. Furthermore, since the front of the lens does not rotate, polarizing filters can be used much easier. The lens has a weather-resistant construction that protects it from dust and moisture, which is especially important for outdoor weddings or senior shoots. The Sigma 70-200 also incorporates a water and oil-repellent coating that allows water to be wiped away easily and prevents oil from sticking to the surface. This helps with the maintenance of the lens surface become even easier. The lens is also designed with a customizable tripod socket, which can be adjusted to different angles and provides a stable and secure mount for the lens when shooting on a tripod or monopod.

The lens is quite hefty, weighing in at 3.97 lbs. It can especially get quite heavy when trekking a long hike or carrying in your camera bag, but the rugged build and optical quality help to compensate for this weighty lens. I have been using the Sigma 70-200 for over 3 and a half years across a wide variety of climates and conditions. Shortly after purchasing the lens, pushed the weather sealing to the test as I photographed in the rain for over 4 hours on the Alaskan seaside. Even though the weight is something to consider, the build quality weather sealing, and optical performance is phenomenal and produces amazing results.

Optical Performance

The Sigma 70-200 f2.8 DG OS HSM Sports lens has an advanced optical design that produces high-quality, sharp, and clear images. The lens includes two FLD (Fluorite) and three SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass elements, which minimize chromatic aberration and ensure accurate color reproduction. The lens also features a Super Multi-Layer Coating that reduces flare and ghosting, ensuring high contrast images even in challenging lighting conditions.

The lens has a fast f/2.8 maximum aperture, which allows for shallow depth of field effects and provides excellent low-light performance. This makes it perfect for creating beautifully blurred backgrounds and capturing intimate, emotional moments during weddings.

Autofocus

The Sigma 70-200 f2.8 DG OS HSM Sports lens features a fast and responsive Hyper Sonic Motor (HSM) that provides accurate and quiet autofocus. The lens also includes a manual focus override function that allows you to adjust the focus manually without switching to manual focus mode. This provides more flexibility and control when capturing those quick fleeting moments. When paired with the Canon EOS R5's subject detection, the lens performs very quickly and locks on focus in an instant. The lens also includes a focus limiter if you determine that you do not need the entire focus range available, also increasing the speed of focus.

Image Stabilization

The lens features an Optical Stabilizer (OS) system that minimizes camera shake and provides up to 4 stops of stabilization, allowing you to shoot handheld at slower shutter speeds without worrying about blur caused by camera shake. Intelligent OS is an algorithm that enables photographers to pan more effectively. It uses information collected by an acceleration sensor to detect a panning movement (horizontal, vertical or diagonal) and deliver effective stabilization. This feature is particularly useful when capturing moments where it's essential to have a steady hand and still get sharp, clear images.

Conclusion

Overall, the Sigma 70-200 f2.8 DG OS HSM Sports Telephoto Zoom Lens for Canon is a versatile and high-quality lens that is well-suited for a wide range of photographic genres. I have found that it is particularly useful in capturing portraits. With its advanced optical design, fast and responsive autofocus, and durable construction, this lens is an excellent choice for photographers who want to capture intimate, emotional moments in a variety of lighting conditions. Whether you're capturing the joy and love of a wedding, the unique personality of a senior, or a stunning landscape, the Sigma 70-200 f2.8 DG OS HSM Sports lens is sure to deliver stunning results and help you create beautiful, timeless images. Brittany & Tim https://www.travisbrooksphotography.com/blog/2023/2/brittany-tim

This past September I had the opportunity to photograph the Wedding of Tim and Brittany in Westlake, Ohio. I have known Brittany for many many years from riding the same school bus together in High School to going to the same youth group at church. I was very honored and grateful to be able to capture her big day.

As with most weddings, the preparation is one of the most important pieces to kick off the big day. Even in a crowded hotel room, there were some great moments captured and some nice set ups for those every special detail shots.

The weather ended up being absolutely perfect and we were able to have their first look take place at the place they had their first date - Starbucks.  This particular Starbucks is very busy and constantly bustling with people going in and out throughout the outdoor shopping plaza. My wife was able to shuttle over to the Starbucks with Tim while I rode over with Brittany. We were able to discreetly set the whole thing up, and while there were a lot of people watching the whole scene play out, Tim and Brittany were taking the moment for themselves.

The ceremony and reception took place at Wagner's of Westlake, a venue well suited for both weddings and receptions alike. The hall was beautifully decorated and set for the big event.

After the big "I do," it was time to party with the reception in full swing. Music, food and dancing followed as a great day came to a close and the newly weds ended their night with one last photo.

The Helios 44-2 58mm f/2: A Classic Lens for Creative Photography https://www.travisbrooksphotography.com/blog/2023/2/the-helios-44-2-58mm-f/2-a-classic-lens-for-creative-photography The Helios 44-2 58mm f/2 is a classic lens that has been popular among photographers for decades. This lens, which was originally manufactured in the Soviet Union in the 1970s, has become a cult favorite among photographers for its unique character and versatility. I've spent some time, in both personal and professional applications, exploring what makes the Helios 44-2 58mm f/2 such a special lens and why it's worth considering for your photography kit.

Bokeh and Swirly Bokeh

One of the most distinctive features of the Helios 44-2 58mm f/2 is its bokeh. Bokeh refers to the quality of the out-of-focus areas in an image, and the Helios 44-2 is known for producing smooth and creamy bokeh that is highly sought after by photographers. In addition to smooth bokeh, the Helios 44-2 is also known for producing a unique "swirly" bokeh that gives images a dreamy, ethereal look. This swirly bokeh is created by the lens' spherical aberrations, which cause light to bend in a circular pattern as it passes through the lens.

Sharpness and Color Rendition

While the bokeh and swirly bokeh are the main selling points of the Helios 44-2 58mm f/2, it's worth mentioning that the lens is also known for its sharpness and color rendition. The lens is capable of producing sharp images with good detail, and its color reproduction is warm and rich, with a slightly yellowish tone that gives images a classic, film-like look.

Build Quality and Price

The Helios 44-2 58mm f/2 is a well-built lens that is designed to withstand heavy use. The lens features a metal construction that feels solid and durable, and its manual focus mechanism is smooth and precise. I enjoyed pairing my lens with the Canon EOS R5 with the included manual focus assists available on that body. Being able to punch into the scene and see the exact focus was great. The focus peaking was also a nice addition to visually see the focus pull as I was rotating the lens' focus ring.  In terms of price, the Helios 44-2 58mm f/2 is very affordable, making it a great choice for photographers on a budget who want a unique and versatile lens for their kit. You can easily find them listed on eBay for ~$55-$65. You can also find really affordable M42 to EF/ EFS adapters from Fotodioxpro for as little as $15.

Final Thoughts

The Helios 44-2 58mm f/2 is a classic lens that is highly regarded by photographers for its unique bokeh, sharpness, and color rendition. If you're looking for a lens that will help you create creative and visually interesting images, the Helios 44-2 58mm f/2 is definitely worth considering. The manual nature of the lens did slow my workflow down slightly (I tend to run/gun), but the shakeup of pace was refreshing and allowed me to think more about composition and framing. The affordability and quantity of these lenses on the market make it worthwhile to try out and experiment with. So why not add one to your photography kit and see what kind of magic you can create with this classic lens?

The Exposure Triangle: Understanding the Fundamentals of Photography https://www.travisbrooksphotography.com/blog/2023/1/the-exposure-triangle-understanding-the-fundamentals-of-photography MicrophoneMicrophone

Photography is an art form that requires a combination of technical skills and creative vision. One of the most important concepts in photography is the exposure triangle, which refers to the three elements that determine the exposure of an image: aperture, shutter speed, and ISO. These 3 fundamental functions of a camera all control the driving force behind photography - light. Let's explore each of these elements in depth and discuss how they work together to create a well-exposed image.

Aperture

Aperture refers to the size of the opening in the lens through which light enters the camera body. The size of the aperture is expressed in f-stops, with larger f-stops indicating a smaller aperture and vice versa. Aperture affects two things in an image: depth of field and amount of light.

Close up of camera apertureCamera ApertureLens front side exposed aperture blades diagram of camera aperture at different opening stagesCamera ApertureLens front side exposed aperture blades

A large aperture (small f-stop such as ƒ1.2 or ƒ1.8) creates a shallow depth of field, which means that only a small, narrow portion of the image will be in focus (typically in a plane parallel to the camera sensor), while the rest will be blurred. This can be useful for creating a more dramatic and artistic look, especially in portraits and macro photography. On the other hand, a small aperture (large f-stop such as ƒ11 or ƒ16) creates a large depth of field, which means that most of the image will be in focus (again, typically on a deeper plane parallel to the camera sensor). This is useful for landscapes, architectural photography, and other situations where you want to keep everything in focus.

Shallow depth of fieldShallow depth of field Large depth of fieldLarge depth of field

In addition to depth of field, aperture also affects the amount of light that reaches the camera sensor. A larger aperture lets in more light, which can be useful in low-light conditions, while a smaller aperture lets in less light, which can be useful for controlling the exposure in bright light. You can think of this in the same way the human eye behaves - as you are in a darker environment your pupil dilates and opens to let in more light; inversely, the brighter the environment, the more your pupil will constrict to limit the amount of light.

Shutter Speed

Shutter speed refers to the amount of time that the camera's shutter is open, allowing light to reach the sensor. Shutter speed is expressed in seconds or fractions of a second, such as 1/60s, 1/125s, etc. Shutter speed affects two things in an image: motion blur and amount of light.

Camera Sensorcamera Sensor

A fast shutter speed (e.g., 1/1000s) will freeze motion in an image, which is useful for capturing fast-moving subjects such as athletes, birds, or vehicles. On the other hand, a slow shutter speed (e.g., 1/4s or slower) will create motion blur, which can be useful for conveying a sense of movement or for creating a more artistic look.

1.6 sec1.6 sec

1/250 sec1/250 sec

Motion blur - long shutter speedMotion blur - long shutter speed Freeze motion - short shutter speedFreeze motion - short shutter speed

In addition to motion blur, shutter speed also affects the amount of light that reaches the sensor. A slower shutter speed lets in more light, which can be useful in low-light conditions, while a faster shutter speed lets in less light, which can be useful for controlling the exposure in bright light.

ISO

ISO refers to the sensitivity of the camera's sensor to light. A higher ISO value means that the sensor is more sensitive to light, while a lower ISO value means that the sensor is less sensitive to light. ISO affects the amount of light captured in an image and the noise level in the image.

A high ISO value (e.g., ISO 800 or higher) can be useful in low-light conditions, as it allows you to use a faster shutter speed or smaller aperture to control the exposure. However, a high ISO value can also result in more noise in the image, which can be noticeable as graininess or speckles in the image. A low ISO value (e.g., ISO 100 or lower) is useful for controlling noise in the image, but it may require you to use a slower shutter speed or larger aperture to control the exposure, especially in low-light conditions.

High ISO comparisonHigh ISO comparison - ISO 8000

ISO 8000 - crop to show additional noise in image

Balancing the Exposure Triangle

Now that we've covered the basics of each element in the exposure triangle, let's talk about how to balance them to create a well-exposed image. The key is to understand that aperture, shutter speed, and ISO are all interrelated and affect each other.

ChildChild PuppyPuppy

For example, if you use a large aperture to create a shallow depth of field, you'll need to compensate by either using a faster shutter speed or a higher ISO to prevent overexposure. Similarly, if you use a fast shutter speed to freeze motion, you'll need to compensate by either using a smaller aperture or a higher ISO to prevent underexposure.

The key to balancing the exposure triangle is to understand the relationship between aperture, shutter speed, and ISO and to adjust one or more of them to achieve the desired exposure. This may take some trial and error, but with practice, you'll become more familiar with how to balance the exposure triangle to create the look and feel that you want.

Final thoughts

The exposure triangle is a fundamental concept in photography that every photographer should understand. By mastering the art of balancing aperture, shutter speed, and ISO, you'll be able to create well-exposed images that capture your creative vision. So next time you're out shooting, experiment with different combinations of aperture, shutter speed, and ISO and see what works best for you. Happy shooting!

Alaska - The Ultimate Destination https://www.travisbrooksphotography.com/blog/2022/7/alaska---the-ultimate-destination It has been 3 years since my trip to Alaska and I can still vividly remember the grandiose landscapes and larger than life vistas.

In 2019, myself along with a group of teenagers and fellow adults traveled to Kenai Alaska for a missions trip organized by New Life Church in Sandusky, Ohio. The youth group was traveling to help with the yearly Salmon Fish Frenzy that occurs every year, in July, as a way for locals to provide food for themselves. It is a large event with hundreds of people fishing for salmon along the coast line. Our purpose was to provide food, games and some entertainment for the locals and their kids during the day as fishing was happening as well as sharing the gospel.  This was truly a fantastic experience and such a great opportunity to meet so many great people.

Near the end of our trip we had the opportunity for some sight seeing as well as some epic adventures. I was able to join a few others from the group in seeing some of the Alaskan coastline as we sailed around the Seward inlet. Alaska definitely has some of the best views and I, being a photographer, was loving every minute of it! I can't wait to head back and explore even more of Alaska!

Greene Family https://www.travisbrooksphotography.com/blog/2022/6/greene-family I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to photograph the Greene family over the years. They all bring so much fun and excitement to their sessions. It is also exciting to be able to continue to see each of the kids grow and feel more and more relaxed during their sessions. This alone helps in capturing those special, genuine moments that will last a lifetime.

For this session we ended up going out to Huron to the James H. McBride arboretum. The scenery is perfect and lends itself to fantastic photography. If you are ever in Huron this is a definite place to visit.

Yet again, we were able to capture some great family portraits! Check out the images below:

Vigour Auto https://www.travisbrooksphotography.com/blog/2022/5/vigour-auto I've had the very fun opportunity to photograph a longtime friend's new businesses venture and startup. Starting a few years ago, Joey had become interested in detailing cars, with a goal of one day being able to work on high end and exotic cars. As one of the only high end car detailers in the area, he was pioneering the market and building his clientele.

Through some of his projects, he wanted some images and video to help showcase his work. This was a very exciting opportunity for both Joey and myself as I was able to photograph some nice cars and build my automotive portrait portfolio, and Joey was able to have a great portfolio of images to showcase his work.

Over the course of a few months I was able to photograph the process, from start to finish to really show how much a good detailing job can transform a vehicle. This whole process was both enjoyable and eye opening, giving me a new respect to the entire process.

I am grateful for the opportunity and for a good friend to allow me to photograph a different genre from my normality. If you are interested in having your car detailed be sure to check out Vigour Auto Detailing

Andrew, Class of 2022 https://www.travisbrooksphotography.com/blog/2022/4/andrew-class-of-2022 I had such a fun time photographing Andrew's senior photos!

I had known Andrew and his mom for a few years, photographing a couple family sessions and a wedding. So it was exciting to have the opportunity to photograph Andrew for his official senior photos.

We ended up shooting at the Schoepfle Gardens in Birmingham. This location was well manicured and the perfect spot for an outdoor session. We even managed to photograph Andrew's Jeep !

Denise, Class of 2022 https://www.travisbrooksphotography.com/blog/2021/11/denise-class-of-2022 I had a blast photographing Denise for her senior photo session! Just like her older brother, Sal, she decided on going to the Firelands arboretum in Huron, OH. This time we were able to capture the arboretum during the fall, capturing all of those autumn colors.

Denise surprised me with her fun and amusing personality. This was very apparent as we photographed her lifeguard uniform as one of her outfit selections. I'm glad to have had the opportunity to get to know Denise a little better during her session.

Sal was able to swap out a couple outfits during his session to get a free different looks. We definitely got some great images!

Adam & Erinn https://www.travisbrooksphotography.com/blog/2021/7/adam-erinn 10 years, an entire decade, is how long Adam and Erinn have known each other. And they are just getting started! I had the privilege of being able to capture some of the moments that they shared in their anniversary session.  It was the first time for me out at Schedel Gardens, located out in Elmore Ohio. The landscape was an absolutely picture perfect setting for the couple's session!

Ours Family - New addition https://www.travisbrooksphotography.com/blog/2021/4/ours-family---new-addition I was super excited and honored to be able to photograph Dustin and Lydia's family photos with the official new addition of Ellee! After a long and at times uncertain journey of adoption, the Ours family grew one more member.

Being early spring, the James H. McBride arboretum was the perfect location for the outdoor session. Located just behind the Firelands campus of BGSU, the small ponds and flowering trees seem to pop with color during the spring.

Dustin and Lydia had created some fun signs and brought some props to help announce their exciting news. The weather and location came together to help create some fantastic images. Congratulations on your new family Ellee!

Greene Family https://www.travisbrooksphotography.com/blog/2020/10/greene-family I had the pleasure of photographing Adam and Erinn's wedding reception after their wedding in New York City. Since then I've had the opportunity to photograph their family over the years.

For their family photos this year, we ended up traveling to the Castalia quarry, which offers some great landscapes for photos. The quarry is unique in the fact that it can create scenes that do not look like they were photographed in Ohio.

The warm tones of the fall leaves helped to pull everyone's color palette together to create some nice images. Take a look at some of the images from their family session!

Dynamic Lighting - Advanced Tutorial https://www.travisbrooksphotography.com/blog/2020/3/dynamic-lighting-advanced-tutorial Intro to Video?

If you already know me, I started my interest in photography only after having been shooting short videos and promos for some time. The original thought going into college was that I would end up pursuing a cinematography degree. During the course of my pursuit, however, I switched gears and began to primarily focus on photography. While I have filmed smaller projects here and there over the years, my main focus has been photography. It was a nice change of pace and maybe even a little bit nostalgic to begin filming again.

During a slower than usual couple weeks at work and before a mandatory shut down and quarantine, I was able to wrangle a few of my coworkers to help in filming a quick little tutorial video. I had started filming tutorial and tip videos a couple months prior that we would end up distributing to the other studios in our territory in order to better our photography and creativity as a whole. I generally ended up, due to having the equipment and know how, becoming the camera man and filming all of the various angles and perspectives for each tutorial. This time however, I was able to step from behind the camera and have a chance to show off some really cool lighting techniques that I would typically use in my day to day studio workflow. While the video does go into some specifics, it is generally aimed at a stylistic and inspirational photography approach rather than a technical dissertation.  I may try to film some more tutorial or quick tip videos in the future and peel back the curtain on some of the fun photography techniques I've learned over the years. Check out the video below as well as some of the "straight out of camera" reference images!

Breaking out! https://www.travisbrooksphotography.com/blog/2020/3/breaking-out Man popping out of yellow paper backgroundYellow Self Portrait-3
This week I decided to try one of my new color seamless paper rolls for a quick shoot. Instead of the typical setup, I decided to try shooting through the roll by ripping a hole in the center and framing the subject (myself) directly in the center. In order to help ensure the hole in the paper from falling to complete black, I decided to throw a colored light behind me into a grey seamless paper roll to add a little bit of interest to the background.

The main light used in the images was a beauty dish with a diffusion sock placed high and slightly to camera right. There is also a gridded strip box behind and to camera left of the subject (just to give separation and dimension to the image). There was also a large parabolic umbrella (diffused) used as a fill light to bring in more detail to the shadow areas. For the background light (illuminating the grey seamless) both blue and orange gels were used on a monolight. Check out some of the images below!

It was my first time hopping around Columbus, OH for photos. Ethan and Sami had some great spots picked out and we ended up with some stellar photos!
